Indian HEad Massage

What is Indian Head massage and what are THE benefits?

It is a treatment that focuses on massaging acupressure points along the scalp, neck, face and shoulders, often using circular massage strokes to improve hair and scalp condition. The technique originates from an Indian alternative medicine system called Ayurveda, meaning  ‘the science of life’

Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice that has been used in India for over 2000 years.

The benefits of Indian head massage:

  • it is believed to promote hair growth by increasing oxygen and nutrients transportation to the hair follicles
  • may prevent headaches and migraines by releasing built-up tension in the head and neck area and relieving muscle stiffness
  • may renew and balance energy levels by working with the three higher energy centres (coronal, third eye and throat chakras)
  • may relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety through relaxation
  • may relieve stress and quiet the mind
  • may stimulate lymphatic drainage of the face, scalp, neck and shoulders  by circulating blood to the neck area
  • may promote better sleep by reducing stress, activating the release of serotonin and endorphins

As with any holistic modality, the therapeutic effects cannot be guaranteed.

Quick Facts:

  • duration of the massage is approximately 30 to 40 minutes
  • the treated body parts are the scalp, shoulders, neck and face
  • circular movements along acupressure points, strokes, stretches and vigorous tapping are used to increase circulation, soothe and relax
  • liberal use of massage oils on shoulders, neck, scalp and hair, to promote nourishment of the skin

What can I expect?

A typical Indian head massage treatment, usually starts with the shoulders, as they often hold a lot of tension. The upper back is also  massaged, working around the shoulder blades and arms.

Following this, a flowing motion is applied to the neck massaging and stretching to relieve any stress and tension.

After a while, the scalp is  massaged along the acupressure points on the head, followed by the forehead, the area around the eyes, lips and chin.

This  massage is  coupled with oils, which condition the hair, promote growth and healthy skin. Coconut, sesame and almond oils are the most popular to use as they are perfect for dry hair.

Let the therapist know if you suffer with any oil or essential oil allergy, before the massage!
